Graphic Novel Book Club: Pride Reads

Saturday, June 21 • 3pm

Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to the format, dive into the vibrant world of graphic novels – where stunning visuals meet compelling narratives.

For Pride Month, we’re suggesting two celebrated titles to read or bring and share a title with the group that you find engaging.

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe
Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, originally wrote a comic about reading stats as the only autobiographical detail e felt comfortable sharing. Years later, Gender Queer expands on that, chronicling eir journey of self-discovery—from awkward crushes and coming out to bonding over fanfiction and navigating medical trauma.

What began as an explanation for eir family became a powerful and accessible guide to understanding gender identity, offering insight for advocates, allies, and anyone curious about what it means to be nonbinary and asexual.

Flamer by Mike Curato
I know I’m not gay. Gay boys like other boys. I hate boys. They’re mean, and scary, and they’re always destroying something or saying something dumb or both.
I hate that word. Gay. It makes me feel . . . unsafe.

It’s the summer between middle school and high school, and Aiden Navarro is away at camp. Everyone’s going through changes―but for Aiden, the stakes feel higher. As he navigates friendships, deals with bullies, and spends time with Elias (a boy he can’t stop thinking about), he finds himself on a path of self-discovery and acceptance.
