    The American Library Association affirms that all libraries are forums for information and ideas, and that the following basic policies should guide their services.

    1. Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.
    2. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.
    3. Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.
    4. Libraries should cooperate with all persons and groups concerned with resisting abridgment of free expression and free access to ideas.
    5. A person's right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views.
    6. Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the public they serve should make such facilities available on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use.

    The following are the guidelines for an employee's use of his or her Kingston Library Employee Services account, provided by Google:

    1. Google Policy
      • Kingston Library Employee Services is hosted by Google. You must be sure to comply with Google's Terms of Service at all times. You will be asked to accept Google's Terms of Service the first time you log into your account.
    2. Checking E-mail
      • Your e-mail account is to be checked on a daily basis. This because there may be communications pertaining to the Library that you need to be aware of.
    3. Attachments and Links within Messages
      • While Google provides anti-virus scanning for all incoming attachments, you must use caution when opening attachments within your mail. Do not open attachments from unknown sources.
      • Opening executable attachments (files ending in "exe," "pif," "scr," "bat," etc.) is prohibited while using Library computers.
      • Do not follow web links within messages from unknown senders. Such unknown links can lead to malicious web pages which could potentially compromise the security of Kingston Library's computers.
      • Be aware of where web links lead -- before following a link, hover your mouse over the link and look at the URL where it leads in the status bar of your browser. Doing so may reveal that a link that appears to be leading to in fact leads to a completely different web page
    4. Passwords
      • Do not share your Kingston Library Employee Services password with anybody. This includes other Kingston Library employees.
      • Passwords should be created with security in mind. Use a mix of letters and numbers.
      • Do not use words for passwords -- for example, "automobile" is not an acceptable password.
        • Replacing letters in a word with numbers is not acceptable, either -- no matter how clever you may think it is, "aut0m0bile" with two zeroes is not much more secure than "automobile."
    5. Distributing E-mail Addresses to Patrons

      Do not give out employee e-mail addresses to patrons for library functions such as holds, renewals, etc. Instead, distribute one of the following approved e-mail addresses. This policy makes any staff changes transparent to patrons and makes sure that patron e-mail always gets delivered to the appropriate person.
