Here are some answers to a few commonly-asked questions. If you have a question that isn't answered either here or elsewhere on the site, feel free to ask any of our helpful staff members.
How do I get a library card?
Getting a library card is easy. Just stop by the library with a valid picture ID and proof of permanent residence. Proof of residence could include a piece of business mail, a bill, or a bank statement. Once you've got your picture ID and proof of residence, you can get your very own library card free of charge. Once you have it, though, don't lose it! It costs $1.00 to replace a lost or stolen library card.
Where can I use my library card?
Kingston Library is a part of a group of 65 libraries called the Mid-Hudson Library System. Once you have a Kingston Library card, you can use that card at any of the libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library system, including libraries in Ulster, Dutchess, Putname, Greene, and Columbia Counties. How long can I keep items I've checked out?
Whenever you check out an item from the library, you will be given a receipt telling you exactly when your items will be due back. However, here's a general overview of how long you can expect to keep things out:
- Books may be checked out for up to three weeks and may be renewed up to two times. However, if a book is on a waiting list, the next person on the waiting list gets the book at the end of the three weeks and you may not renew it.
- Reference books may never be checked out. You may only use them within the library.
- Audiobooks on CD and cassette may be checked out for up to three weeks and may be renewed up to two times. However, downloadable audiobooks may not be renewed. See our downloadable audiobook page for details on checking out downloadable audiobooks.
- Videos and DVDs may be checked out for up to one week and may be renewed once.
- Audio CDs may be checked out for up to one week and may be renewed up to two times.
- Magazines from the last three years, excluding the most current issue, may be checked out for one week and renewed once. Current issues and magazines from more than three years ago may not be checked out.

How can I renew an item I've checked out?
Renewals may be made by visiting the library, by calling the library at (845) 331-0507, or online. To see how many times you may renew an item, refer to "How long can I keep items I've checked out?" above.
I can't find the item I want at Kingston Library. Can I get it from another library?
Yes! Books can be requested from any of the 65 libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library system. You may do so by visiting the library, calling the library at (845) 331-0507, or through the online catalog. All you need is your library card. If you can't find the item you want in any of the libraries within the Mid-Hudson Library System, special arrangements can be made to try and get it from outside the library system. Just ask a library staff member.
What happens if I return an item late?
It depends. All items from Kingston Library have a late fine of 20 cents per day. However, items from other libraries might have different fines for each day they are late. We suggest you do yourself a favor and return your items on time so you don't have to worry about fines.
When I return items, do I have to return them to Kingston Library?
Nope. You can return anything you've checked out at any of the member libraries within the Mid-Hudson Library System.
